Blown In Attic Insulation

Air sealing

  • Blown-in attic insulation is a type of insuation made of cellulose, fiberglass, or similar materials that are thick, dense, and lumpy in consistency.

The “blown-in” aspect refers to using a special machine to insert the insulation into parts of the attic.

  • Blown-in attic insulation helps retain warm air inside the home during winter and prevent heat from entering during summer, leading to reduced energy consumption and cost savings.

  • Pros of blown-in attic insulation include the ability to fill small spaces, low cost, and protection against insects and vermin.

  • Cons of blown-in attic insulation include the need for professional installation, the potential for ceiling sagging if too much insulation is used in one area, and proper sealing and ventilation to prevent mold and rot.

  • There are two main types of blown-in attic insulation: cellulose and fiberglass.

  • Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper and has an R-value of 3.5-3.8, while fiberglass insulation has an R-value of 2.2-2.9 per inch and is often the cheaper option.

  • Homeowners can receive a tax credit As of January 1, 2025, air source heat pumps that are recognized as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient are eligible for this credit. There are two pathways for eligibility. One pathway is designed for heating-dominated applications (i.e., cold climates), and the relevant eligible products will be designated as ENERGY STAR Cold Climate. The other path is for cooling-dominated and dual-fuel applications (e.g., a heat pump paired with a furnace). Consumers and contractors can choose either pathway regardless of the home’s location, as there is no longer a regional requirement.

ENERGY STAR offers a listing of eligible heat pumps (both central heat pumps and ductless heat pumps) designed for contractors to help you choose the product that will meet the requirements to claim the tax credit when you file your 2025 taxes.

A partially constructed or undergoing renovation space featuring two white electrical panels on the left wall. The ceiling is exposed, showing various hanging wires and cables. The walls are unfinished, with visible patches and rough textures. The lighting is dim, primarily coming from a single bulb hanging from the ceiling.
